Search Engines
Getting your site noticed is vital for small businesses. Achieving a position within the first ten returns of a search is very difficult for a new site. This is primarily because the search algorithms use a site's popularity (ie the number of pages linking to your site) as one of the main factors in determining the rank position. This is not to say that one should not bother to try and any site should be constructed to optimize the chance of being found. In addition, site owners may wish to consider the sponsored link option.
Search Engine Optimisation
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is a process of preparing a website so that it achieves the best
possible position in the main body of the search engine rankings when a user performs a particular
search. The main body is distinct from the sponsored area where users have paid to achieve a
particular position. SEO will have no effect on the position given in this area.
Techniques for optimising a page for search engines should be used appropriately. If a search engine considers illegal methods have been used they will reduce the rank of a site to zero. There are a variety of legitimate techniques which can be used. Find out more in the article Tips for search engine optimisation.
